[VIDEO] Zak Claxton’s guide to enjoying live music in Second Life

The other day, BadWolf Bracken told me to watch Zak Claxton's video guide to enjoying live music in Second Life. It's both an educational and an entertaining tool – meaning that while it serves as a promotional vehicle for Zak's guitaristic talents like so many concert footage clips do, it ALSO imparts his actual experiences as a live musician inworld. Wet, in-context examples do far more than any boring theory could.

The cultural relevancy – including mixed-reality bits showing how Zak's avatar relates to his enthusiastic first-life self – communicates with power and humor. Also addressed are broader issues of marketing yourself, which every musician

How to Make Your Photo Fit

Ever notice that your photos run into your or the feeds sidebars? This typically means your picture is too large for the theme. The best rule of thumb is to keep the width under 512.

How do you do this? If you remember in my last post, we talked about photo size and bigger the photo the better. This is still true but now we are going to look how to keep the quality and still be within a usable bloggable size.

My photo sizing trick uses flickr since I may not always achieve the correct size in my editing program.  Here are the simple steps I use to make sure that my photos are of the right size:

Not An Introduction to Second Life Prim Lights

This is dedicated to those knowledgeable and helpful folk over on the SL Universe forums, without whom this post might never have been written.

This is not the post I was going to write.

I was going to give an introduction to using Second Life prim lights. Because I needed some illustrative snapshots, I created a simple prim, activated the light feature, and started taking pictures.

At which point I realised that after five years in Second Life there are still things that I don’t know, one of them being that lights don’t quite work how I expected.

As an example, here’s a cube which has been turned into a light-source. You can see it lighting up the floor, as expected:

How to Take a High Res Snap Shot

Have you noticed that your photos aren’t as “smooth” as others? Do you see jagged edges on avatars and objects in your photos? It might be due to the low resolution of your photographs.

“GAH! What’s Resolution?”, you my ask. Its the level of detail and/or pixels. The higher the detail and pixels the better the photo. You will want to take the biggest photo possible.

High-res Snapshot

It’s under the ‘Client’ menu and when you have a ‘X’ in front of it, it’s activated. It’s only useful if you use the ‘Snapshot to Disk’ function because you can change the resolution settings manually in the Take Snapshot option window. Normally if you take a ‘Snapshot to Disk’, it has the same resolution

Welcome!

Over the last three years in SL, I’ve come across a lot of tips and tricks related to blogging, photoshop, and SL. Problem is, I’d find the tutorials and forget them, and I’d have a lot of trouble finding them again when I actually needed them. So I finally decided to do something about it and keep an archive so expect links to guides, tutorials, and videos as well.

If anyone has any suggestions, feel free to let me, Luna Jubilee, know via a notecard with the URL and details.

Taking pictures in Second Life

Someone told me her Second Life looks nothing like it does on my picks. A good graphics card certainly helps, but there is lot more you can do. Here's what I do when I takes pictures in sl, I'm not pretending to be an expert here, but maybe you find something usefull for yours: Graphic settings: In preferences I shove my settings up to ultra. Slows you down, but for pics it's a world of difference. Then most of the time I turn local lights of en go to sun and moon only. [QUICKTIP] Getting an attachment out of your body (really)

“Doctor doctor, I’ve got prims stuck in me and I can’t get them out!” While not the same terrifying magnitude as a chestburster, here’s a common problem: you’re positioning an attachment but, whups, it slides into your avatar and you accidentally exit Edit mode, rendering you frustrated.

Don’t panic! In this perky video tutorial, I’ll show you how to angle your camera so you can extract that attachment and get it back to where it needs to go.

Find the camera too confusing? There’s another way: reset an attachment’s slot! How the heck do you do that? Well, why don’t

[BUILDING] Makin’ copies… (1) Shift-drag and (2) Copy selected

There are a number of ways to copy objects you create or have the rights to in Second Life. This speeds up the process of building with similar parts, like walls, roads, and when you need to create variations. For example, copy a tree and alter each one's branches to appear different.

And to be preemptive about it, yes, RESPECT OTHER RESIDENTS' INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY. DON'T BE A JERK!

I'm sad to say that although two of the more useful ways to copy objects have existed for years, they're not immediately obvious. (Something we hope to rectify in the future, yeah.) Infact, I learned both of these from more experienced builders, who had the knowledge passed on to

[COMMENTARY] The great help ecosystem

One then-new Linden remarked to me,

"Second Life is different from my previous game development job, because there's no single launch party – it's ongoing."

I thought that was a particularly apt way to sum our ever-changing landscape. While it's true conventional software has patches and new versions, in SL, an incredible array of stuff is incrementally improved by Lindens and Residents. That's why despite the big announcements we make about hot bug fixes and cool new features, so much happens on a day-to-day, hour-to-hour, minute-to-minute basis that can't easily be understood unless you're part of it. (Something Heisenbergian going on here.) For instance, the decisions that lead to issue resolutions are often discussed openly on our

Textures – A Few Quick Tips

Some hints and tips that might make working with textures quicker and more efficient.

1. Instantly apply a texture

…without even opening the Build dialog! Simply drag a texture from your inventory onto the surface that you want to texture. The texture will instantly be applied to that face. Obviously this will only work on prims that you have modify permissions for.

2. Applying a texture to multiple faces

In the Build menu, tick ‘Select Texture’ as usual, and select the first face. Then hold down the Shift key and click on any other faces that you want to texture, even on completely different prims. Then apply the texture that you want, via the Texture tab. The texture will be applied

Second Life Male Shapes

Background

I often say that avatars come in all shapes and sizes, and it is this variety that maintains avatar diversity Second Life, which in turn is what makes Second Life such a fantastic realm to explore. However, for some, as it was for myself, creating a pleasing shape shortly after entering Second Life can be a daunting task. Nearly three years ago, whilst travelling the Grid with newbie eyes wide open, I observed that most males had extremely broad shoulders and thick limbs that would put Arnold Schwarzenegger to shame. Moreover, most men’s heads were either far too small or even too large

[BUILDING] Unraveling the mysteries of prim flicker

This is called "Z-fighting", and the "Z" refers to the "depth buffer" used in 3D computer graphics – it's not just a Second Life issue.

[QUICKTIP] How the heck do you change where you login?

Ever get the feeling you'd rather log into Second Life at home, or the last place you visited? What about being able to CHOOSE which Region (and specific coordinates) you log into? This tip comes from "Changing your login location", part of our perusatory (I made that word up, K?) of Knowledge Base help files:

You can change your login location to be your home, the last location you logged off at, or a specific set of coordinates. The last one is useful for accessing places faster, and in some cases, solving technical issues like being unable to login. Here's how to do it:

[XSTREET TIPS] Using ADVANCED SEARCH to find what you want, faster!

Search should be simple and straightforward. Enter in what you want to find, and seconds later, you've got it! (Or should I say, you've got hits. ;) ) Our Xstreet virtual marketplace's basic search works with single words, but when you want to search for exact phrases and by parameters like price, that's where these come in handy:

BOOLEAN OPERATORS – Sounds techy, right? Named after a math dude named George Boole, these are basically little bits you add to your search to include, exclude, and weight specific terms. For instance, if you add "+" to the beginning of a word, each result MUST have it. As another example, if you're open ...

[Q&A] Why can’t I put animations/sounds into a gesture?

From various Residents in our reader mailbag…

Why doesn't an animation or sound appear in the dropdown list when you're editing a gesture?

Check if it has full permissions. Animations and sounds must have full permissions to be included in a gesture. This is because a gesture functions like a "wrapper" that references individual animations and sounds. If an animation was no-transfer but the gesture could include it, that'd be an unfair way to work around the creator's permissions. A similar case applies for non-copyable animations and sounds.

It's true you can't do much to modify animations and sounds after uploading them aside from renaming and changing their description, but the rule still holds true.

Second Life Item/Object Resizing Tutorial

Introduction

With all of my ranting these days and railing against improperly used resizing scripts, I thought that I would locate some item resizing tutorials. [XSTREET TIPS] Depositing fund$ into an inworld terminal (so you can buy awesome stuff)

Do you like shopping? 'Cuz I sure do. Teaching you that OBEDIENT CONSUMERISM IS GOOD might be all Big Brotherly in another world, but since Second Life's inworld content is almost entirely created by your fellow Residents, shopping at the Xstreet virtual marketplace is more like supporting a homegrown artist a la Etsy. Even if said content creator's products and service are incredibly professional. (Best of both worlds combining creative intimacy with electronic convenience, huh?)

ANYWAY… as compelling as a litter of kittens, this is one in a series of tips I'm doing about how you can make the most out of Xstreet. Buy what you're looking for, have fun, and

Debug Permissions: permissions for power users

Ever wanted to see more than the basic Modify/Copy/Transfer permissions? Wonder what specific "permissions groups" (yourself, next owner, group-owned, everybody, etc.) can do with an object?

Wonder no more, there's a special Debug Permissions tool you can activate from within the Advanced menu. And like other Advanced menu features, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK AND WE DON'T OFFICIALLY SUPPORT IT. So don't cry if it breaks one day or is altogether superseded by something awesomer. However, I've been using Debug Permissions for several years and I know it's helped many a merchant figure out what happens to an object if someone buys it.

[QUICKTIP] Searching the Knowledge Base and Wiki in-Viewer

Now that Second Life's official help documentation, the Knowledge Base, is on the Wiki as reported here, you can search the KB when you're using the Second Life Viewer. This has been a feature for quite some time but it always needs more publicity, so here goes:

Click the Search button. In the All tab, change the Any Category dropdown to Wiki. Type in a query and click the Search button within the Search window.

As shown in this video! This search is Google-powered, so it's cool to be really specific about your keywords. Alas, video tutorials and other Flash content don't display yet.

Sell CONTENTS so customers don’t have to unbox your goods!

It's nice to get gift-wrapped presents, BUT there are many times when selling items in a box in Second Life is unnecessary! It can cause customers problems because many stores don't have a place to rez the box and unpack it, and a big pain point for new Residents is that they confuse the box with the item, and wear it — leading to "WHAT THE HECK IS THIS ON MY RIGHT HAND?!" embarrassment (used to be "box on head syndrome", but that changed awhile ago).

As an old SL joke goes, "STOP TO SELL STUFF IN A BOX!" You can sell items directly from wall display-to-inventory so that when someone buys it, it'll

Just some random stuff

So I’ve had many a discussion with various content creators about a store card system.  What is an alternative? Ideas got tossed and then there was the idea of using an LSL script to put in a prim near the item for sale and have the prim textured to say, “BUY AS GIFT” (or something similar). How could that script get the user to load XstreetSL in their browser. With Cassie I wrote this short LSL script to have a box, when rezzed, thank the user for their purchase, offer up a website link in a blue dialogue box, and then delete the box.
