[LAND] Grid, Estate, Region, Parcel… what’s da difference?
One of the most common confusions about Second Life I come across is distinguishing between land hierarchy terms. As in: "What's the difference between a region and an estate?" "Are a region and a sim the same thing?"* Totally understandable.
Ever seen the brilliant short, Powers of Ten? I highly recommend watching it, if only to get an awe-inspiring idea of our real world fits together, and how bigger groups contain smaller units.
In a similar way, since Second Life is 3D and graphical, I thought I'd show you an elegant, visual "cheat sheet" of our land hierarchy. Click to enlarge (or right-click and download), and

[CULTURE] Lark of the Covenant
At our last Documentation Team office hours — which are actually a lot more casual and fun than the name implies — the topic of covenants came up. You can read the whole transcript.
A covenant is the terms & conditions set by a private estate owner (and sometimes contributed to by estate managers and others) for land renters. Zoning/theming codes, payment info, and naturally, appropriate behavior are found in covenants. And ah yes, not unlike like dating, both parties who enter into such a relationship must mutually agree. Covenants have also conveniently and creatively applied to any Resident who enters an estate, such as roleplaying regions.
Since Linden Lab can't blanket all

Ever since I stumbled onto Krissy Muggleston’s blog a few months ago, we’ve been trading ideas and inspirations back and forth. She recently asked me to provide some input on how I place high quality images on my blog. I wrote up a notecard which has been requested by a few others.

You may know much or all of this already, so if you want to add more knowledge to the pile, leave a comment and share your own love! P.S. In a recent plurk I asked for some suggestions for new bloggers (and us oldies!). Here’s just some of the suggestions: Amount of Blog Posts It seemed that it was the group’s agreement that the average number of blog posts is, on average, 7-10 for the week. Of course there could always be a week that has several events or a few major releases from several designers. This 7-10 posts per week is a good rule of thumb. Zoe Demar shared the idea of creating a flickr account and blog only the favorite pictures. Flickr can host many of the photos of those that just don’t make it into blog posts or even to post there instead. While scrolling down Gogo’s blog, I came across this entry that someone suggested Gogo heavily post-processed her photos. The person also says that white hair inSL always has pixelated edges… which is not true at all. Just look at Winter’s blog! I don’t see pixelized or jagged edges. About post-processing snapshots, I can only speak about my own which aren’t post-processed besides been lighten up. For this post, the images weren’t processed at all aside from being cropped and set side by side.

Tutorial: How to Hide Inconvenient Prims
Cajsa Lilliehook’s tutorial on how to hide prims to help improve inworld snapshots. Also, this is great for blogging if you don’t have access to photo editing software. Cajsa’s Tutorial Thank you Cajsa for sharing! If anyone else has links to share, feel free to find me inworld or on plurk.how to | clear cache in Second Life®
I’ve received this as a notecard in-world having Orange Planer as the creator. It’s a very helpful notecard since I’ve tried to explain a couple of time how to manually clear cache and it wasn’t clear to them. Maybe I wasn’t making myself clear enough. Anyway, if you do it right, you won’t damage your computer by manually clearing cache generated by Second Life® viewer.
You’ve lost inventory, a window has disappeared, the viewer is acting strangely, you can’t see particles. You’ve uninstalled Second Life and reinstalled, you’ve cleared your cache, you’ve tried going to the beta grid. Nothing’s worked.
There are a couple things left to try, neither of which you will hear from Linden Lab.
1) Manually clear the

Search is all about finding what you're looking for. I'm delighted that we've recently added Google search to our Wiki, which includes the Knowledge Base help files – it makes a lot of old pains moot, because while MediaWiki search has its benefits for the technically-savvy, I know a lot of people (like myself) were utterly confused. Enter Google, which apparently is pretty popular.

The other day, BadWolf Bracken told me to watch Zak Claxton's video guide to enjoying live music in Second Life. It's both an educational and an entertaining tool – meaning that while it serves as a promotional vehicle for Zak's guitaristic talents like so many concert footage clips do, it ALSO imparts his actual experiences as a live musician inworld. Wet, in-context examples do far more than any boring theory could.
The cultural relevancy – including mixed-reality bits showing how Zak's avatar relates to his enthusiastic first-life self – communicates with power and humor. Also addressed are broader issues of marketing yourself, which every musician
...How to Make Your Photo Fit
Ever notice that your photos run into your or the feeds sidebars? This typically means your picture is too large for the theme. The best rule of thumb is to keep the width under 512.
How do you do this? If you remember in my last post, we talked about photo size and bigger the photo the better. This is still true but now we are going to look how to keep the quality and still be within a usable bloggable size.
My photo sizing trick uses flickr since I may not always achieve the correct size in my editing program. Here are the simple steps I use to make sure that my photos are of the right size:

This is dedicated to those knowledgeable and helpful folk over on the SL Universe forums, without whom this post might never have been written.
This is not the post I was going to write.
I was going to give an introduction to using Second Life prim lights. Because I needed some illustrative snapshots, I created a simple prim, activated the light feature, and started taking pictures.
At which point I realised that after five years in Second Life there are still things that I don’t know, one of them being that lights don’t quite work how I expected.
As an example, here’s a cube which has been turned into a light-source. You can see it lighting up the floor, as expected:

Have you noticed that your photos aren’t as “smooth” as others? Do you see jagged edges on avatars and objects in your photos? It might be due to the low resolution of your photographs.
“GAH! What’s Resolution?”, you my ask. Its the level of detail and/or pixels. The higher the detail and pixels the better the photo. You will want to take the biggest photo possible.

Over the last three years in SL, I’ve come across a lot of tips and tricks related to blogging, photoshop, and SL. Problem is, I’d find the tutorials and forget them, and I’d have a lot of trouble finding them again when I actually needed them. Taking pictures in Second Life
Someone told me her Second Life looks nothing like it does on my picks. A good graphics card certainly helps, but there is lot more you can do. [BUILDING] Makin’ copies… (1) Shift-drag and (2) Copy selected
There are a number of ways to copy objects you create or have the rights to in Second Life. This speeds up the process of building with similar parts, like walls, roads, and when you need to create variations. For example, copy a tree and alter each one's branches to appear different.
And to be preemptive about it, yes, RESPECT OTHER RESIDENTS' INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY. DON'T BE A JERK!
I'm sad to say that although two of the more useful ways to copy objects have existed for years, they're not immediately obvious. (Something we hope to rectify in the future, yeah.) Infact, I learned both of these from more experienced builders, who had the knowledge passed on to
...[COMMENTARY] The great help ecosystem
One then-new Linden remarked to me,
"Second Life is different from my previous game development job, because there's no single launch party – it's ongoing."I thought that was a particularly apt way to sum our ever-changing landscape. While it's true conventional software has patches and new versions, in SL, an incredible array of stuff is incrementally improved by Lindens and Residents. That's why despite the big announcements we make about hot bug fixes and cool new features, so much happens on a day-to-day, hour-to-hour, minute-to-minute basis that can't easily be understood unless you're part of it. (Something Heisenbergian going on here.) For instance, the decisions that lead to issue resolutions are often discussed openly on our

Search should be simple and straightforward. Enter in what you want to find, and seconds later, you've got it! (Or should I say, you've got hits. ;) ) Our Xstreet virtual marketplace's basic search works with single words, but when you want to search for exact phrases and by parameters like price, that's where these come in handy:

From various Residents in our reader mailbag…
Why doesn't an animation or sound appear in the dropdown list when you're editing a gesture?Check if it has full permissions. Animations and sounds must have full permissions to be included in a gesture. This is because a gesture functions like a "wrapper" that references individual animations and sounds. If an animation was no-transfer but the gesture could include it, that'd be an unfair way to work around the creator's permissions. A similar case applies for non-copyable animations and sounds.
It's true you can't do much to modify animations and sounds after uploading them aside from renaming and changing their description, but the rule still holds true.
