...“Escaping” our SFO Datacenter
We’re entering the final stages of our data center migration from San Francisco (SFO), and hit a significant milestone last week when we successfully migrated mySQL.agni (Second Life central database) from SFO to our Dallas datacenter (DFW). This was a critical step for a number of reasons.
First, the SL infrastructure has always been highly sensitive to backend latency between mySQL.agni, associated slave databases and the SL simulators. So, physcially repositioning the central db over 1000 miles away from its original location had the potential to introduce many performance issues. Fortunately, over the last 18 months, we’ve enabled many internal tools and analytics that gave us the data necessary to anticipate

Potential RL-identity exploit with Avatars United
For those of you using their RL-email for their SL-avatar, using the default settings of Avatars United might pose a risk of unintentional exposing the address!Snickers Snook posted an insightful article about "Spam via Avatars United", where she explained that since joining AU she receives significantly more spam on her supposedly undisclosed email address. She dug a bit into the settings and found that the default is that even non-installed AU-widgets can access certain data and send emails.
While Snickers primarily saw the spam problem, my friend Zonja Capalini pointed out that while being spammed is a nuisance, the bigger threat lies in the unsolicited disclosure of a potential RL email address and thus disclosure of ...

Temporary Display Errors with L$ Balances
A number of concerned Residents have contacted us regarding unexpected drops in their inworld account balances (usually to -L$1) immediately after purchasing items.
This is a display error, not an accounting issue. Your actual L$ balance is still there.
If your account balance suddenly drops in this fashion, a quick change of group tags may correct the balance display for you. If not, a relog certainly should.
By way of assurance: When you pay an inworld vendor or avatar, the recipient does not have the ability to alter the amount of the transaction. Two healthy precautions you can take to prevent unexpected actual changes to your account balance are:
Take your time and read the amount on “Fast Pay” panels before you send payment ...[RESOLVED] Login and In-World Issues

The 2500 prim skeleton

Approximately 2500 prims were used for the huge Leviathan skeleton on the new Ahab's Haunt sim. Of those 2500 prims, quite literally only a handful are sculpts. All the other prims are regular prims. Not a single prim I found is larger than 10x10x10 meters or - in other words - this humongous build was constructed without a single megaprim.
The skeleton was built by "moles" - content creators contracted by Linden Lab. It is a safe assumption that the moles know what megaprims are, and how to use them. At the ...

Album of the Week ~ Cuba
Carthalis Rossini has created a small but incredible album of images with a Cuban theme. The images are lush, romantic and passionate, like so much of Carthalis' work. I hope there will be more images added, but if not, it is still a fantastic album.
Island Monthly Fee Pricing for 2010
Last year we had a lot of feedback from Residents that they need us to be more open and predictable around pricing and product changes. We're committed to doing exactly that and I hope in recent times you have seen us talking earlier and giving more notice of upcoming changes. Now that we're into February I would like to provide all of our residents with some pricing assurance around the monthly island fees for the coming year. This post does not refer to Mainland pricing.
As most of you will know, last summer we allowed Grandfathering of all existing Homesteads bought before July 1st 2009, with a commitment that this Grandfathered monthly pricing would run until July 1st
