The 2500 prim skeleton

Approximately 2500 prims were used for the huge Leviathan skeleton on the new Ahab's Haunt sim. Of those 2500 prims, quite literally only a handful are sculpts. All the other prims are regular prims. Not a single prim I found is larger than 10x10x10 meters or - in other words - this humongous build was constructed without a single megaprim.

The skeleton was built by "moles" - content creators contracted by Linden Lab. It is a safe assumption that the moles know what megaprims are, and how to use them. At the ...

Album of the Week ~ Cuba

Carthalis Rossini has created a small but incredible album of images with a Cuban theme. The images are lush, romantic and passionate, like so much of Carthalis' work. I hope there will be more images added, but if not, it is still a fantastic album.

Island Monthly Fee Pricing for 2010

Last year we had a lot of feedback from Residents that they need us to be more open and predictable around pricing and product changes. We're committed to doing exactly that and I hope in recent times you have seen us talking earlier and giving more notice of upcoming changes. Now that we're into February I would like to provide all of our residents with some pricing assurance around the monthly island fees for the coming year. This post does not refer to Mainland pricing.

As most of you will know, last summer we allowed Grandfathering of all existing Homesteads bought before July 1st 2009, with a commitment that this Grandfathered monthly pricing would run until July 1st

To Designers

Mel and I have discussed this in length, to mod or not to mod. As a scripter, business owner and builder he has very strong opinions about what we put into Second Life, and what each person takes from it. He holds very true to those convictions, and even though he has done work for some big businesses in Second Life, he will and has also turned down a lot of jobs because of not wanting to make things that will just add to the strain on our resources.

Read what he has to say, and maybe look at what you are doing, and ask yourself what are the reasons behind your perms choices. I have found often that

Coming Soon: Viewer 2 Public Beta

Happy New Year! As you may have noticed, it's 2010, and we haven't yet shipped the project we referred to last year as "Viewer 2009". We made the decision to delay for a very good reason: It wasn't up to our standards of quality and user experience, and we simply needed more time to make it better.

A project the size of Viewer 2 (as it's now called) is a new thing for us at the Lab. We've not done much at this scale before and we've made some substantial changes to how we work in order to pull it off. Here's a bit ...
