[VIEWER 2 TIP] Shared Media: Add custom content with data: URI (no webpage upload needed!)
Say there's some custom content you want to put on Shared Media, like several embedded Flash videos with your styled text commentary underneath each one. How do you do that?
One thought that comes to mind is: "I'd need to put together a webpage and upload it." You'd be correct, but in many cases, there's a much easier way:
data: URIsWhat?!
Basically, instead of an address you paste on a Shared Media face that begins with "http://", a data: URI starts with "data:" and is a lot longer, because it doesn't just refer to other content, it includes the content. (Although some URL-shortening services can help.)
That means you need some basic knowledge of HTML,
...[VIEWER 2 TIP] Shared Media: Show YouTube on a FULL prim’s face!
I'm a big fan of narrative arcs, and Shared Media has wrapped up some loose ends very neatly (with other ongoing threads, like privacy, continuing to be covered).
I've been asked for YEARS: "How do I play YouTube in Second Life?" Before Shared Media, some very clever Residents devised ways to continually re-fetch the MP4 links that YouTube has made increasingly available for videos on its site. But these dynamic URLs could still be unreliable.
Now we have Flash support with Shared Media, we can show YouTube as-is without any conversion or hosting hassles.
BUT! Questions continue to be asked. Something I'm hearing a lot of is:
It's cool I can show ...[VIEWER 2 TIP] Using the navigation bar to teleport and search
At the top of the Second Life Viewer 2 user interface is the "top bar" which is a trinity of three horizontal "strips":
Menu bar - Carried over from Viewer 1.23 and simplified.Navigation bar - Shows inworld location on the left and includes search, since finding stuff is part of getting around.Favorites bar - Drag landmarks from the sidebar here to have quick access, just like in a web browser.Did you know?
You can hide the navigation and favorites bar by right-clicking on their dark gray parts and choosing the appropriate option. You can also show/hide parcel coordinates and properties by right-clicking inside the navigation bar's text field and, again, choosing the appropriate option. ...So, I got my wife started using Viewer 2 and…
It's often easier to understand something when it hits close to home. I'm really thankful for the active conversation that's been taking place on SLTNT about Viewer 2, both things you do and don't like. As for stuff I haven't covered yet — I'll be doing more tips, in addition to forwarding key pain points (they come up time and time again for good reason) to our product gurus. Pardon I haven't blogged in a few days, as I was heads-down on something closely related: Viewer 2 Beginner's tutorials!
These tutorials aren't just for newcomers, because some concepts are shown in a fresh light. Same things, but viewed more clearly in a new context, like how

How to create a post for SecondList
Creating a post is SIMPLE in SecondList, although the user interface is not exactly the way Mr. Craig’s website is laid out. When I was putting the site together I worried about that, but the way the SecondList software is written it is actually an improvement!
So lets start so everyone can start posting the dramz:
In the upper left hand corner of the website (under the logo) you will see a navigation menu that looks like such:

Each of these are links that direct you to important parts of
...[VIEWER 2 TIP] Drag websites to show Shared Media in seconds
As easy as Shared Media is to get started with — as I showed you earlier — you can show a webpage on a prim even easier. How? Drag-and-drop an URL from your web browser right onto Second Life Viewer 2! I know I've mentioned this before, but it's worth sharing again:
As you can see, it's much more friendly than editing a prim, clicking the + button to paste in an URL, and so on. What a snap to show a friend a webpage you're looking at.
SLURLS TOO OMGThe fun doesn't end there. One of my fave thangs about Viewer 2 is
...Photo Tips : Rules of third
IntroductionHello,This is Muerte. Today, I introduce "Rules of thirds" which helps you to arrange a photographic object.
When I try to take or trim a photo, I think " where should I arrange this photographic object?!".
The rules of thirds is good for such situations. This rules means dividing a photo into 3 areas, and arrange a object to the 4 intersections which you like. 4 intersections is below.
Try & check
Today's sample photos are below. This photo was taken at "". The SIM looks very cold and some animals like fox were staying. Very calm situation ...
[VIEWER 2 TIP] Selectively disable Shared Media ™
Shared Media invites a plethora of rich movies, sounds, and more to be experienced inworld. However, you may run into instances where several things are simultaneously playing audio and it sounds like an awful jumble. (I anticipate some of you will, if not already, use the positive upside of this to create layered, Brian Eno-esque art installations in tandem with sound-emitting prims.)
By using the media controls in the upper-right, you can turn all media (both Shared Media and old-style parcel music) on and off with a single click. You can also target individual media.
Furthermore, this panel empowers you to find Shared Media. Since Shared Media isn't spatialized (like open voice chat), you can't tell where

...[VIEWER 2 TIP] Resident-shared tweaks
We're designing Viewer 2 to be easy-to-use without extensive modification. However! One of Second Life's ongoing strengths is the many diverse communities we have: more technically savvy Residents can help non-geeks discover under-the-hood changes. Even if you're not very technical, the running joke is that like a certain trademarked brand of potato chips, you can't change just one debug setting. And that's how you learn. (We've moved some of those obscure things into more common places in Viewer 2 because they're so darn useful.)
Some Residents have already been sharing their
Viewer 2 TweaksAdding older functionality back is part of it, as is exploring the new debug settings. Some of these tweaks require

Hello. This is Muerte. Today, I introduce "how to use Lens filter". This skill is very simple and speedy.Today's Sample Photo
today, I try to retouch this warm image photo. The original photo is below. This SS was taken at "Isla Menorca". The SIM has warm & blossomed much.

1.Select photo layer & click "Lens Filter".

2.adjust slider. & finish.

All processes are these 2 steps. This retouching will be very hard & painful if ...
[VIEWER 2 TIP] Giving inventory, including with group notices
An always popular feature is…
GIVING INVENTORYas in "Giving a gift to a friend".
You're getting used to Viewer 2 and learning what has moved where.
So what happened to giving inventory? It basically works the same but is done through the sidebar.
One of the big changes we made in Viewer 2 is the sidebar: so much functionality is effectively packed into the sidebar, reducing clutter.
Watch this video tutorial to learn how you give inventory with the sidebar!
But we've also heard — and I can relate to this — requests to show multiple "floating" windows at the same time. For example, in 1.23, I'd often have many
...[VIEWER 2 TIP] How to add shared media to an object
Viewer 2 introduces Shared Media™, which frees showing a movie or webpage from the confines of a parcel.
I repeat, Shared Media NOT dependent on a parcel of land (unlike the older parcel media, which has been that way since 2006).
That's right, if you WEAR an object with Shared Media enabled, like a TV screen on your head, you roam around inworld and others can see it. (As always, be awesome, don't violate the Community Standards.)
So you've seen our cool promo. How do you add Shared Media for yourself? Jeremy Linden made a step-by-step guide! You can do it in seconds. Check out:
Adding Shared Media to an objectWhich

Today's entry is Photoshop Tips for beginners who want to adjust your SS. How to use "Blight/Contrast" tool is today's menu."Blight" is the tools for changing blight & dark, "Contrast" changes photo's light & darkness. This tool is useful for PS beginners to impress own SS.
Before retouching !
Before retouching your SS, there is necessary to think about the "goal". Retouching is very interesting, but many changes of photo makes bad effects.
1st, you have to watch your SS objectively. Today's sample photo was shoot from "J Peace island". Very quiet and elaborate SIM.

[VIEWER 2 TIP] Automatic camera zoom + new View controls
In addition to the core "makes for great marketing copy" features that made it into Viewer 2, there are lots of little ones which may seem kind of ordinary, but that's precisely because they're intended to be useful everyday in your Second Life.
For example, we know how many Residents have a hard time wrestling with the camera. Once you've spent time living and breathing inworld culture, Alt-zooming becomes second nature to you, sure. But you may feel it could still be easier — including for family and friends you're introducing to Second Life.
Viewer 2 has automatic camera zoom. You can right-click any object or avatar, and on the context menu, choose Zoom In. If
...AO Tutorial – Second Life
This is how I make my AO’s and how I have guided others in the past. This tutorial was supposed to have been done ages ago, but I could never get around to it until now.
The new VR Studio has made it an even easier method now with the new libraries, as in the past I would have had to do so with lots of stands. This is how I do it… and is just a suggestion as to how you can make your own unique to you AO by combining the animations and existing AO’s you may already have.
* Firstly rez all the AO’s you have in your inventory. see pic 1

[VIEWER 2] Check out the new *help* awesomeness! And beyond…
With a lovely new Viewer comes many questions… and the answers you hope for. I know, some of it's the proverbial "takes time to get used to", but like a fitting DJ remix of a dancefloor classic, I believe underneath the shiny armor, you'll find lots to snuggle up with. <3
Let me say this: Viewer 2 doesn't only deliver on some mythological promises (hello web-on-a-prim!), we've endowed it with the BEST HELP SYSTEM in a Second Life Viewer yet.
Built right in.
It's so simple to use.
On just about any control or thingy (technical terms, I know) you open, there's a ? button in its upper-right corner. Click that to see context-sensitive help, lovingly crafted by Linden Lab's
...[LINDEN HOME] Help articles
As I hope you've heard in Jack Linden's post, Linden Homes Launched Today! I just got out of an energy-filled meeting with some of the many Lindens who worked on Linden Homes — aren't we an attractively diverse congregation of avatars?
In addition to the big thing of simply making it easier to get started living in Second Life, Linden Homes helps solve a longtime confusion the Documentation Team I'm on has seen over… and over:
Now that I have a Premium account, where's my free land?
Since a Linden Home — themed house and land — is included with a Premium account, there you go!
We'll continue to increase
...[QUICKTIP] Forum discussions look all messy? Use FLAT mode!
Yeah, we've been hearing LE PAIN about threaded view on this blog's forums. We're investigating if changing the default makes sense, and in the meantime, I'd like to let you know and make it more obvious that THERE IS A FLAT VIEW! Which is good if you're used to vBulletin and other forum environments. Carl Linden observes (emphasis mine):
Flat mode makes the pages load much faster, as the entire thread (which could be EXTREMELY long) does not have to load. Furthermore, Flat mode makes it so the latest posts are at the end, rather than dispersed throughout the page - making finding new updates to a thread much easier.Switching is EASY.
Change to Flat view in 30 ...[LAND] Grid, Estate, Region, Parcel… what’s da difference?
One of the most common confusions about Second Life I come across is distinguishing between land hierarchy terms. As in: "What's the difference between a region and an estate?" "Are a region and a sim the same thing?"* Totally understandable.
Ever seen the brilliant short, Powers of Ten? I highly recommend watching it, if only to get an awe-inspiring idea of our real world fits together, and how bigger groups contain smaller units.
In a similar way, since Second Life is 3D and graphical, I thought I'd show you an elegant, visual "cheat sheet" of our land hierarchy. Click to enlarge (or right-click and download), and
...[CULTURE] Lark of the Covenant
At our last Documentation Team office hours — which are actually a lot more casual and fun than the name implies — the topic of covenants came up. You can read the whole transcript.
A covenant is the terms & conditions set by a private estate owner (and sometimes contributed to by estate managers and others) for land renters. Zoning/theming codes, payment info, and naturally, appropriate behavior are found in covenants. And ah yes, not unlike like dating, both parties who enter into such a relationship must mutually agree. Covenants have also conveniently and creatively applied to any Resident who enters an estate, such as roleplaying regions.
Since Linden Lab can't blanket all
...[BLOG TIPS] Google for easier searching! See your recent activity!
Some of you have been calling blogs.secondlife.com a veritable "flog", and I suspect this is not just a portmanteau of forum + blog! Fear not, one need not get all Bob Flanagan just because ye can't find something in seconds. There's GOT to be a better way!
So okay, there is…
How do I search easier? If you're confused by blogs.secondlife.com's own search, you can use Google to do a site-specific search. This works for just about any domain. Here's how:
Go to Google. In the big search box, type "site:blogs.secondlife.com topic" and replace "topic". For example, "site:blogs.secondlife.com "dance animations"". See a demo. Click Google Search. Now then, a related question… what about all those times
...[BASICS] Opening boxes so you can use the stuff (like clothes) inside
It's one of the most important Second Life basics which almost every Resident comes across sooner or later, often asked as:
I bought something on Xstreet but all I got was a box! What gives? I have a box with clothes, how do I wear the clothes instead of the box? I know how to open a box, but where do I find a place to rez it?Fret not! Just check out our fantalicious…
Opening boxes pageand within minutes, you'll be opening those boxes like — well, I was going to make a Tiger Woods reference but I think you get the point.
Even if you know how to open a box, you may have
...[FUN] Awesomize your profile with Unicode and ASCII art
I regularly cruise SL Answers looking for topics of practical and eclectic intrigue. Some subjects deserve wider attention because they're such a hot part of our Second Life culture. For instance, have you ever browsed other Residents' profiles and your jaw dropped with amazement because they somehow got fancy, arty symbols amidst all the text? Or arranged a bunch of glyphs into floral swirls or a kitten? Here're many awesome examples!
...How to: Take High Quality Second Life Snapshots for Your Blog
Ever since I stumbled onto Krissy Muggleston’s blog a few months ago, we’ve been trading ideas and inspirations back and forth. She recently asked me to provide some input on how I place high quality images on my blog. I wrote up a notecard which has been requested by a few others. I’m sharing an expanded version here just in case it helps some other fabulous people. You may know much or all of this already, so if you want to add more knowledge to the pile, leave a comment and share your own love! P.S. Don’t judge against the quality of the images in this post; I used an external program to capture them. Getting Started Let’s assume you have ...Blogging Tips & Suggestions
In a recent plurk I asked for some suggestions for new bloggers (and us oldies!). Here’s just some of the suggestions: Amount of Blog Posts It seemed that it was the group’s agreement that the average number of blog posts is, on average, 7-10 for the week. Of course there could always be a week that has several events or a few major releases from several designers. This 7-10 posts per week is a good rule of thumb. Zoe Demar shared the idea of creating a flickr account and blog only the favorite pictures. Flickr can host many of the photos of those that just don’t make it into blog posts or even to post there instead. Sharing all the outfit details and ...[VIDEOS] Planes, pipe organs, & primstars oh my!
I get cool stuff in my inbox everyday — both about content IN Second Life and ABOUT Second Life. The three Resident-created videos I'm presenting are a mix of both, so I hope they'll open your eyes, ears, and possibly other senses to your creative exploration in our favorite virtual world!
Airplane tutorialFirst up, ever wonder how to fly an airplane? Trent Denja shares a video tutorial with charming narration and showing one way you do just that. He also touches on VICE (Vehicle and Infantry Combat Environment) and covers things to watch out for, like Region crossings. I frequently hear Lindens admire how resourceful ingenuity surpasses the initially conceived design of the world:
...[XSTREET] RSS feeds make shopping updates easy
While it's 2010 and real-world flying cars aren't as abundant as Second Life's, there's no shortage of news to keep up with. Dataglut — OMG TOO MUCH STUFF TO KNOW! — can be stressful, and there's bound to be only some stuff that's really relevant to you. If you've made a resolution to manage your daily dosage of Internet, maybe this'll help.
We use RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds to stream assorted news & info to you. For example, on this very blog, you can subscribe via RSS so you automatically get updates; the links are on the front of blogs.secondlife.com! On our Facebook fan page, if you want to get the

[original size for better view -- left pic with jagged edges]
While scrolling down Gogo’s blog, I came across this entry that someone suggested Gogo heavily post-processed her photos. The person also says that white hair inSL always has pixelated edges… which is not true at all. Just look at Winter’s blog! I don’t see pixelized or jagged edges. About post-processing snapshots, I can only speak about my own which aren’t post-processed besides been lighten up. For this post, the images weren’t processed at all aside from being cropped and set side by side.
What happens when you see pixelized with jagged edges screenshots is that some ...
