Minor setup fee adjustment for Themed Private Regions

We're happy to announce that the setup fee for Themed Private Regions is set to decrease, starting today! We believe that the new setup costs offer even better value for those that want to hit the ground running with their new island!  Themed Private regions are no different from normal Islands; they just have content already in place such as a conference center or a castle. You can see them listed in the Land Store here. We currently offer a conference center, theatre, moonbase and castle - and hope to add more soon. Once delivered the content belongs to the new Island owner, and can be modified or later removed as they wish.

Shared Media, Security, and Privacy

At Linden Lab, we take Resident security and privacy very seriously.  Since we launched Viewer 2 and Shared Media on 2/23, there's been a lot of excitement about the creative potential of Shared Media and we're already starting to see some very innovative uses of this feature, some of which are showcased in the Shared Media Destination Guide. There's also been a lot of discussion in the community about potential security issues when Residents view Shared Media inworld. We have been closely monitoring the blogosphere and spoken with many Residents about the concerns. I would like to take this opportunity to address them directly and share why

Server 1.38 Beta Now Open

The next server version, Second Life Server 1.38, is now up on the Preview Grid (Aditi) and available for testing.  Server 1.38 is scheduled to be deployed to Second Life the first week of April.

What is in this release?

This server version includes new LSL features and a look at script memory usage if you are using Second Life Viewer 2.0.  Check out the release notes here, which are a work in progress.

The script memory reporting will allow anyone to see summary data for the script memory used by all objects on a parcel - that is the cumulative total amount of memory used by all objects on the parcel.  Parcel owners will get a detailed

***The Onyx Project***

Or, all You Wanted To Know About Malicious Viewers

The Onyx Project exists to educate those people who care to know, of known malicious third party viewers that either have been, or are being used on a daily basis within the Secondlife environment. I am a firm believer in sharing knowledge – it is up to you the reader to determine what you can do with it. Pleae be aware that when these viewers are detected in world, the users are banned by CDS owners and often finish up with accounts terminated by Lindenlab. Please do not use this list as a reference to ‘try out’ a malicious viewer – this is not the intention of this post.

To this end, a

Search in Viewer 2: More Than Just a Pretty Face

V2_Search_Home.jpg

I'm very happy to announce that, as a core feature of the new Viewer 2 Beta, Second Life Search has been redesigned inside and out to make finding the people, places and content you're looking for easier than ever before. We've revamped the interface, overhauled what's happening under the hood, and refocused our work on Web-standard tools and methodologies that have not only improved our ability to bring you more relevant search results, but also made us faster on our feet as a development team. And, we've been building a first-class Search team--

Customize Your Linden Home With Our New Control Panel

If you have a Linden Home you have probably noticed a control panel cunningly placed on an inside wall of your house. Today these panels will be enabled, allowing the home owner to use the Linden Home Control Panel -- a web page that you can use to configure various  aspects of your Linden Home. Since the launch of  Linden Homes on February 17, we've seen nearly 13,000 people take up residence in a Linden Home. The response we've seen to the program so far has been beyond even our expectations, leading us to double the  number of homes that we originally made available. And there are more to

[RESOLVED - 11:03am] Viewer 2 Log in announcement error has been taken down.

[10:16am PST]  We are aware that the Viewer 2 Beta login screen is now indicating that residents are logging into the beta grid, when they are, in fact, actually logging into the Main Grid.  This announcement will be taken down later today. All transactions on this grid are live and will be applied to your Linden balance as it would normally. Check back here for any updates.

Flickr SLURL Issues

Flickr logo If you are a Flickr user, it seems that Flickr is currently treating SLURL.com urls as spam. If you try to add one to a description on Flickr, you get the following message:

"Hey! That URL you tried to post has been used for abuse on Flickr before. If that's you, stop it! If that's not you, sorry, but you can't post links to it."

If you are sending your images to Flickr through Snapzilla (either via flickr@slpics.com or individually), it will still add the SLURL correctly. However, if you try

Twitter OAuth Comes to Second Life

Hi, I’m Gisele Linden.  I’m a product manager here at Linden Lab supporting a variety of technical  projects, and today I’m here on behalf of the Scripting team, also known as Team Pixie Dust (see below), to share exciting  news with you. While working on new scripting features, we built a library that allows scripts in Second Life to talk to Twitter on our internal prototype platform. We recognized that this could be really useful to the Second Life community.  And so with the help of residents Cale Flanagan, Latif Khalifa and Strife Onizuka, we converted it to run on the current LSL scripting platform.

Maintenance on Wednesday

[7:38 AM Pacific] On Wednesday from 5am to 7am Pacific there will be downtime to carry out vital maintenance. During this time you will be logged off and unable to log on again for approximately 20 minutes. This will not impact all residents and should you be logged off for more than 20 minutes please contact support for further information.

At 8am approximately xstreet will also be down for an hour to carry out maintenance.

We will update when both are due to commence.

Grid Stability Update

I wanted to follow up on my Feb 18th posting, specifically to update you on the concurrency blips we’ve been experiencing the last few weeks.   These blips would occur at regular intervals and mostly impact login for short periods of time (less than 1 minute).  As I mentioned in that last posting, we were focused on some networking issues with our newly deployed Juniper core switches.  We’ve made great progress with Juniper and have those issues under control, but the network turned out to be neither the trigger nor the root cause of the login problems.  The trigger was a non-responsive state occurring in one of our mysql.agni slave databases (aux.mysql.agni).

Behind the Scenes of Viewer 2

Woohoo!

This  past Tuesday, we released Viewer 2 Beta to the public. To give you some insight into the work that went into the renovation of the viewer, I want to give you a quick guided tour below. But first, a few important headlines:

This is a Beta. We're still fixing bugs and massaging the UI based on your feedback, but there likely won't be major functionality changes between now and when it becomes the default viewer. However...

We'll be going back to more regular releases  from here on. This means more frequent releases (hopefully quarterly),  each with a more manageable amount of new features.

There's lots  of new

Client Detection System – CDS – UPDATE AND FAQ

Client Detection System - CDS

A few days ago I wrote here about the new system developed by Gemini Cybernetics, enabling land owners, content creators, estate managers and in fact anyone, to at last acquire a reasonable method of protecting their content by detecting the use of malicious viewers.

Many will be pleased to know today of the release of an update and publication of FAQs.

First of all, the FAQs
