FAQ

1. How do I get my posts to show up on the Metavirtual.us feed?

You can be syndicated on Metavirtual by one of two ways please choose one option when filling out the form.

1.  You only blog about one category- in the sign up form you state you want to be syndicated using one category only. If you choose this option you do not have to fuss with labels. I will ensure that categories are kept appropriate.

OR

2. Add the categories manually. If you choose this option your blog will not be syndicated unless you use the categories.

For Wordpress- you must use categories
For Blogspot/Blogger- you must use labels
For TextPattern: (using the tru_tag plugin) – use tags
For Blog.com: you must use categories
Typepad: I believe you use tags

These 5 categories/tags are: MV-SL-Fashion, MV-SL-Technical, MV-SL-Tutorials, MV-SL-General, MV-SL-Business. These categories do not need to be parent categories, they can be child (applies to Wordpress)

2. How do I determine what category/tag I should use on my post?

SLFashion: use tag/category: MV-SL-Fashion —- This feed is dedicated to fashion posts, lotd, general fashion related things- new releases can go here if they are of the clothing, jewelry, hair- apparel and avatar appearance (poses go here since they fall under fashion) related. New release posts for apparel items are not welcome in SL-Business.

SLTechnical: tag/category: MV-SL-Technical —- This feed is dedicated to technical SL items- jiras you need voting on, the new viewer forks, technical info related to the grid, little hacks to fix quirks in the viewer or with building.

SLTutorials: tag/category: MV-SL-Tutorials —– this feed is for the tutorials. I’ve searched all over google for SL tutorials and that was annoying. I’d love to have one feed just for this alone and hope that it grows. There’s plenty to teach and plenty to learn in SL.

SL Grid General: tag/category: MV-SL-General —- This feed is for all things grid! Visit a place? Tell it here. Wanna bitch about Linden Lab’s Policy? HERE! Controversial helps, from a blog hit standpoint.

SL Business: tag/category: MV-SL-Business —- New releases only for items non apparel related. If there is enough interest in a non apparel items feed (furniture, prefabs) I will set that up. Also Business hints and tips. Marketing strategies, etc.

3.  I don’t use Wordpress or Blogger for my blog, will my blog work?

Metavirtual takes advantage of the RSS category element in order to populate the aggregator.  If you use something else just contact me privately and I can test out your blog software in my sandbox.

4. How does Metavirtual’s excerpting work and why do you excerpt?

Metavirtual’s excerpting works by showing the first 120 words (not characters) in a post and any allowed HTML tags. These HTML tags allow images, links, paragraphs, breaks, header1, center, bolding, and embedding videos from youtube. If you specifically would like something added, let me know I will add it. If I see something formatted weird on Metavirtual I will check the source post and modify the tags allowed.

Metavirtual excerpts the syndicated posts because not only does it drive more traffic to the source blog but it also saves me on the server side.

5.  Do I retain the intellectual property of my posts?

Of course! I have made extra effort to make sure that when the post is clicked on that it goes to your blog. Metavirtual has added excerpting to help drive traffic directly to your blog.

6. How long do you keep my past posts on the feed?

I would like to keep the Tutorial and Technical categories for as long as possible. Those categories were specifically started to be a reference for users.  This may not always be the case but as of 8/09 I would like to keep to this philosophy.  For Fashion and Business, and General categories I will, from time to time, clean them out.  It’s been a very common feature request for Wordpress to be able to delete archived posts after a certain date of a certain category. Until I find something like that I will remove categories by hand as best I can. If anyone disagrees with this or would like their posts to delete after a certain amount of days I can try to accomodate you. Keep in mind I have a life too.

7. Is there anything else?

I believe that if a person owns a business or product that they have the right to do whatever they wish with that product or business. That being said if I feel that a blog is not appropriate for Metavirtual then I reserve all rights to remove and not add a blog. I also reserve the right, if I do decide to put up pay advertising, to not accept advertising if I feel that it isn’t appropriate for Metavirtual.  With that said, I doubt we’ll have problems. Keep in mind for many many years I was an op on IRC in a very busy channel. Every minute of every day I received requests to ban so and so for x, y, or z.  One sure-fire way to get me to not react is to whine to me.  If you want to report someone keep it unemotional and I will be all ears. I will not allow Metavirtual to become the playground for other people’s issues.  Metavirtual strives to be a place where it is hugs tiem now plz.
If you have a problem with how someone categorized their posts, contact the author. Mistakes can be made but my goal is to not modify the author’s intended categories unless it’s seriously necessary.
