Needles + Neko = Tattoo
I had passed her Second Life tattoo store countless times in my wanderings. It was impossible not to look inside.
No matter what the hour, there were always two or three would-be victims (sic) people perched on the edge of her ragged couch, paging through tattoo magazines, distractedly awaiting their turn on the tattoo throne.
What intrigued me the most were their faces. Eyes glassy with the thrill of a dare or a secret passion (or maybe just fear), moods passing over their countenances like clouds — I’d try to memorize ...
Taking technical feedback from Residents
My name is Q Linden and I'm the Director of our Applied Engineering group, which is part of the Customer Applications organization. Basically, that means that we work on the Viewer -- bug fixes and small features, among other things.
At SLCC, T Linden found that many of the Residents he spoke with don't know a lot about how we handle technical feedback from Residents -- bug reports and feature requests that come through our public bug tracker known as PJIRA. This blog post is designed to help spread that knowledge.
We have a large number of different ways that we gather feedback from Residents, including:
Information through our support team, including statistical analysis of support tickets as well as ...Search on the Web: Overhauled Outside and In
As part of the secondlife.com site redesign launched today, we also rolled out a new design for Search on the Web. The first thing you'll notice about the new Search page is its modern, rich interface. Once you've done a search, you'll also notice some new functionality:
The content categories are now listed down the left-hand side of the results page instead of in a drop-down menu, and you can click these categories to quickly and easily filter your results. Along with helping you explore places and content, one of the most important jobs of Search is to connect Residents to other people with shared interests. To facilitate those connections, we've redesigned the Events ...Search Rank and Traffic
You may have seen Jack Linden's recent message that we're simplifying how the Traffic score is calculated. I wanted to follow that up with some detail about how that change will affect Search ranking. In the short term, it will have little or no effect. In the long term, this is a small but significant step toward improving Search relevance and ranking.
Traffic is a measure of the amount of time Residents spend on a parcel, a measurement that is useful to land owners as a parcel management statistic. The old Traffic calculation was confusing, though, and so the new calculation has been rewritten to simply tally the number of minutes spent on the parcel by
...Changes to the Traffic Scoring
Every parcel of Land on every region inworld has a Traffic score. Traffic is a measure we developed some years ago to show Land owners how much time other residents spent on their parcels. It's been used in various ways throughout our History to help reward and highlight popular places. More recently it became a part of the way we rank Search results. This was fine whilst we had fewer regions and lower concurrency but as we approach 30000 regions calculating the amount of time that every resident spends on every parcel they visit, every 24 hours, has become an increasingly heavy burden on our systems. Over recent weeks the Traffic calculations have sometimes
...Search.secondlife.com – Pardon Our Dust
Early next week, we will roll out some infrastructure improvements to Second Life Search on the Web, which include switching from PHP to Django-based web services. Searches in the Viewer will be unaffected. For most Residents, searches on the Web will also behave as usual.
For those few developers who have scripted agents pointed at search.secondlife.com, you will likely need to adjust your scripts to work with the new URL and protocol. At this time, we do not support this use case, however, we would like to learn more about it! Please drop me a notecard inworld and tell me about how you use scripts with search.secondlife.com to further your business or projects. Thanks.
New Land auctions unavailable during scheduled maintenance: August 24-26
We will be performing scheduled maintenance to the Second Life Land Auction website next week. This should not affect any land auction transactions between August 17-23. In order to avoid any possible post-maintenance issues (particularly with bidding or the inability to bid), we will not be offering any new auctions from August 24-26.
The auctions that begin Sunday, August 23 will function normally, running for the usual 48 hours, and will end on Tuesday, August 25. After these auctions close on Tuesday, no new auctions will be available for bidding until we resume with the new auction listings at 12:00 p.m. (PST) on Thursday, August 27.
Thank you for your patience.
SLCC 2009 Wrap-Up

Here are some of my favorites from SLCC ‘09:
The biggest and best announcements came from Tom Hale as he introduced Second Life 2.0: and some of it’s key features such as the new SL viewer, the new website, and the interactive web media API. You can read all about these new features and changes in detail here. Tom also announced the long awaited features of mesh support and global illumination. These concepts might be a little complex to some non-content creators, but they look stunning! Learn more about what these features are and what they mean for Second Life here. Mark Kingdon and Philip Rosedale gave joint keynote speeches at SLCC. Philip discussed how ...Second Life 2.0: Tom Hale Presents the New Second Life Viewer, Website, and Interactive Web Media at SLCC

The biggest news coming out of the Second Life Community Convention this year was delivered by Linden Lab Chief Product Officer Tom Hale, aka T. Linden, who announced a dramatic user experience roadmap and gave a tour of several of its features including a new SL viewer and website.
The new SL viewer, which will debut later this year, was designed with user experience in mind. The navigation is a updated so that you can easily go “back” and forth between previous locations and easily use SLURLs as locations. The most used features of the viewer are clustered into a single drawer that opens to a right hand
...Linden Lab Officially Announces Mesh Support in Second Life at SLCC
At this years Second Life Community Convention, Linden Lab Chief Product Officer Tom Hale, aka T. Linden, showed video of a polygon mesh object responding to a dynamic lighting system much more advanced then the current lighting and shadows that are available in several Beta viewers. (videos below) With the new system, light is able to be reflected off of objects to their surroundings. Both are much sought after and desired features of advanced and experienced content creators, especially those who want to make use of existing polygon meshes made in Maya and other industry standard modeling tools. Unfortunately, Hale did not give any indication on when theses features might be available.

...Introducing the LLMedia API
We’re constantly working to enhance the Second Life experience, and I wanted to share an exciting development I mentioned in my keynote yesterday at SLCC: today’s release of the LLMedia API, which lets developers create plug-ins for the Second Life Viewer to bring new media-rendering capability to Second Life.
Currently, Residents who own land have the ability to specify a select set of media types to be used on their parcel through the Land Management settings. This allows Residents to do interesting things like watch videos, show Web pages to visitors, or just add ambiance to inworld spaces with streaming music. However, the types of media that could be used inworld has been limited to only those that
...California Legacy in SL – Episode 4: Dickens in Camp by Bret Harte
Here is our latest episode of The California Legacy Series features Bret Harte’s 1870 poem “Dickens in Camp.”
The California Legacy Project at Santa Clara University in collaboration with Heyday Books is dedicated to preserving California’s unique culture through books, radio productions, and now through the virtual world of Second Life, using machinima to visualize the writings.
Check out the episode and some more of the amazing photos we took behind the scenes during the production!

...Lindens Updates XStreet Guidelines and Bans Unauthorized Sale of Real World Replicas
Starting on September 14, 2009 virtual items that are in violation of real world copyrights or that infringe on brand owners’ intellectual property will no longer be for sale on Second Life’s ecommerce site, XStreet SL.
In line with their other recent changes, Linden Lab employee Pink Linden announced the new XStreet SL listing guidelines prohibiting the sale of unauthorized virtual replicas of real world products and brands including unauthorized clothing, furniture, jewelry, car designs, use of trademarks or logos, avatars based on copyrighted characters or celebrities, and more.
This move comes after Linden was recently sued by Taser International Inc. for trademark-infringement due to products with ‘Taser’ in their description/names being
...Paisley’s Real/Virtual Interview with Phillip Rosedale and Mark Kingdon

Some people have asked me why I haven’t had either one of these two people on my show, the two most well known and fascinating people in Second Life. The CEO M Linden and the Founder and Chairman of the Board Phillip Linden. Well I’ve never had them on my show, because I have never approached either for an interview, because I did not want to re-do what others have done before me. The timing had to be right and I wanted to take an entirely different approach from what has gone before.

Behind The Scenes: The New Linden Dollar API
When you're responsible for a system as complex as Second Life, one of the most rewarding things that can happen is when you roll out a new system and nobody notices. Especially when it's a core piece of technology. We did this just a few weeks ago with a piece of internal software called the Linden Dollar API.
We developed much of Second Life organically, by figuring out how to make new features work "on the fly". For instance, Linden Dollars, the engine of the Second Life economy, are inspected, queried, updated, and transferred in hundreds of places throughout our server-side infrastructure. Early on, when we didn't quite know how Linden Dollars ought to work, all of the
