Running SL on extreme hardware

A couple of years ago I was a strong vocalist for regular PC's, defending their "horsepower" and versatility as superior to any laptop or notebook. Until I embraced the liberty a laptop gives you. For a while I smiled at the people with small and lightweight notebooks, loving my IBM ThinkPad with its nVidia graphics card and fast processor. However the laptop did not like being transported twice a day on the bicycle much, and also my upcoming vacation made me wonder if there is something ... well... lightweight.

A lot of people suggested I should ...

First Look: SL Dashboard

When I checked the transaction history for the store alt, I got an invite to test the new SL Dashboard. The first impression is graphically appealing and reasonable fast.

The single elements can not be moved around as one would expect. Also the opened/closed setting is not persistant between sessions.

What I like is the direct integration of Xstreet SL under "Merchant Tools". What I dislike is that the Transaction History takes a lot more screen real estate.

If it would be possible to permanently delete elements and move elements it could actually quite ...

Zindra: An Update

Last Monday the new adult continent known as Zindra was officially opened to the public. After a week of comments and feedback, we'd like to take this opportunity to update the community to some small changes we hope will make the transition from the mainland and the migration to Zindra a bit easier. An updated map of Zindra to showcase the addition of double primmed areas has been attached.

1) How do I claim a plot if nothing is parceled?  The original idea behind keeping a majority of Zindra unparceled was to allow more freedom for the Residents in their ability to request land. We realize now though that a lack of

Business messenger

There’s lots of non-graphical clients for Second Life out there, starting with AjaxLife and friends and ending with Metabolt and friends.

And all of them are better than nothing when you can’t use a real viewer, but none of them were, in my opinion, satisfactory for what I would want a lite viewer for – and for what, I believe, most people who actually need one would want one for.

That is, customer support, when I’m not capable or can’t be bothered to start up a real viewer.

Almost all of the existing light client offerings suffer from specific shortcomings:

None of them saves logs. Dunno about you, but for me this is a showstopper, because I rely on logs instead of ...

Snowglobe – a first look

Yesterday my SL sister Trinity Dechou mentioned the "Snowglobe" project to me, an open source approach initiated by Philip Linden. While the regular viewers are open source too, it takes rather long until fixes and extensions added by the community find their way into the official viewers. This causes quite a lot of frustration in the community and contributes to the perception of the Lab being "slow" or "uninterested", but basically has to do with the quality assurance procedures behind the scenes. The slowness of the Lab to adapt community fixes and expansions has led to a whole ...

ARC and lag revisited

I wrote about lag and the myths regarding ARC a lot of times in the past, and often referred to Gwyneth Llewelyn's one year old article on the issue. Today, Gwyneth has made an update to the article. Read "Anatomy of Lag" as a guest post on Ana Lutetia's blog.

Personally, I want to once again point out that the introduction of the "Avatar Rendering Cost" display was one of the worst things Linden Lab ever did. The ARC display has a certain informational character, however the (completely arbitrary) red/yellow/green tinting, and the way it was publicized turned it quickly into a tool for discriminating fellow residents. The ARC display does not tell ANYTHING ...

Hey! Be a Man fer Godssake!

Yeah. Why the hell not? Go smoke a cigar. It's perfectly okay to do so in Second Life. Do what you wanna do. Waste time. Don't waste it. Prove something to nobody. Do foolish, insane things. Put on hairs. Walk the walk. Take no guff from anybody. Be nice and sacrifice for your friends. Don't harm anyone. Make yourself laugh. Follow the advice of Richard Brautigan as presented here:

1. Get enough food to eat,
and eat it.

2. Find a place to sleep where it is quiet,
and sleep there.

REZpectable: Donut Launcher

[REZpectable is a blog dedicated to gadgets and gimmicks in SL. I co-founded it together with Shockwave Plasma and Rick Pfalz a while ago, in the meantime Nissa Nightfire has joned the team of authors. Here is a teaser to my most recent article - read the full post on the REZpectable blog.]

The combat potential of baked goods has been grossly neglected over the milennia. Countless times a hard and dry breadroll or ciabatta has saved a life during a melee fight. And also the French baguette gets underestimated in its ...

Welcome to Zindra

LDPW_Map_Zindra_Medium.jpg

Many of you have been waiting patiently for the chance to explore the new adult continent known as Zindra. In coordination with the final release of the 1.23 viewer, we are pleased to announce that the waiting is over! Today, Monday, June 15th, Zindra will be officially opened for the Residents of Second Life. For those of you who have been following this topic since it was first announced back in March, the lack of a solid timeline for implementation may have been frustrating. The final release of 1.23 however, has allowed us the ability to specify certain key dates in the process of moving adult content. Zindra will be open

Coffee and Shopping…Oh My!

Well for a while I've been getting gifts from a place called vinyl cafe. I had no idea why I was getting these but I accepted them because they looked safe. Well the other day I got another freebie. So I asked the person who sent them, "what is this for?"
He told me they were just showing some love to the bloggers, and I was like, "Awww that's sweet!" Well it included two very cute skyboxes, and some wonderful stockings with garters. These skyboxes were too wonderful, so I looked into the other folders they sent me. They had wonderful furniture in one with a very cute couch with couples poses all in it.

TURN THAT FROWN UPSIDE-DOWN!

So today I woke up with a smile on my face. Everything was going my way... la la lalala...

Photobucket

Then BAM! Everything went blahy, as you can see from this dramatic picture. It was reallyyyyyyyy blahyyyyyyyyyyyy

Photobucket

What happened? Blahhhhhhy stuff. But the icing on the cake was when I got to my store and I heard this strange screaming noise. It drove me insane, and I can't remove whatever it is cause I don't have land ownership on the land where the main store is. Who would do such an incredible insane thing like put a scream on someones land? No idea... but that scream made me turn ...

AVATAR IN A BOX…SAY WHAAAAAAAAA!

The other day I was hanging out, and someone random came up to me and said, "Omg I love your avatar! is there a way I can get it in a box?" I was confused and of course stopped and thought, is this person serious? I thanked them then I told them that my avatar isn't availible in a box. She then seemed really confused. I told her I could send her to some places where she can find stuff to mold her avatar, but I would recommend she play around and find a style that fits her personality. She seemed confused still but said thank you... and that was that....this whole conversation baffled me. It baffled me ...

Mister Specific

Well here is the usual blogger excuse coming up: "Gee gosh golly, I have been so busy in RL that I have not had time to post anything lately." That sounds so mealy-mouthed, but hey...whattyagonnado? New job, had to go to a wedding, pulled a ligament in my carburetor, yadda-de-dada-da, etc. So now that the tired, lame reason I have been remiss in communicating here for a lil bit is officially out of the way, on with the show.

Lately it seems that a lot of dudes in SL are actually starting to get "fashion savvy." Which helps make the virtual world a
